low-key outdoor eating under a tarp, right on the street, amongs boxes and under air conditioning vents. it was really nice, there were locals eating there which was a good sign. it also seems very popular with foreign students (there were other groups of westerners from other universities as well as our group) this is probably because....
it has a fixed-price menu, which means we paid 50HK$ each (5 euros) and got all we wanted to eat and drink.. a very good deal. we couldn't order specific things but the very funny owner kept on bringing out plates and we stuffed our faces. oh, and we could have all the Pearl River beers we wanted. i love chinese beer, it has low alcohol percentage and is delicious and light. my favourite is Tsingtao but they recently changed the formula (and the packaging) and it's not as good any more. so i was happy to try Pearl River and liked it a lot.
see? i was sitting right next to an egg box. nice. he brought out some fried dumplings.. which made a nice change from all the steamed dumplings i've been eating. also, usually they have little bowls of dipping sauce all over the place (you can see some delicious sweet chili sauce in the dumpling photo) and one of them is usually soya sauce.. at least, i thought it was soya sauce until i realized it was sweet dark vinegar! this is what i wanted to discover: the small differences between westernized chinese food and the original.. mmm vinegar instead of soya.. delicious. you can also see in the first photo that everyone was appreciating the Pearl River. i hadn't had any drinks since leaving italy 10 days ago so a nice ice cold beer was exactly what i felt like.
it was a really nice night out. people were amazed that i could open beer bottles with a lighter, apparently that doesn't happen in the USA? we in italy are resourceful with our beer. as you can see form the photos everyone was having a nice time. in the end we didn't even eat that much but all the beers made up for it! after the dinner we headed to Wan Chai district because wednesday is ladies' night there and females drink free... probably one of the worst ideas ever... in fact the night ended in a haze of alcohol which could and should have been avoided!
